Using Your Own Name Servers for a Domain

1&1 IONOS allows you to use your own name servers instead of the 1&1 IONOS name servers for each domain. This lets you delegate management of your domain's DNS settings to another provider or even host your own name servers.

Specifying Name Servers

You can change the name servers for the domain by accessing the Manage Domains section of 1&1 IONOS.

  • Select a domain and click the Name Server tab.
  • Click the option Use custom name servers and enter your name servers into the corresponding fields.
  • Click Save to modify the name servers.

You can edit or reset the name server settings in this section at any time. To reset your name server settings and use the 1&1 IONOS default name servers, click Reset settings.

If you change the name servers, it can take up to 48 hours before the change takes effect everywhere due to the decentralized structure of the domain name system.

Effects of Using Your Own Name Servers

If you do not use the 1&1 IONOS name servers, you cannot configure your DNS settings in 1&1 IONOS. In this case, you will need to make changes to the settings with the actual DNS provider or with the particular external name server.
