Configuring a Server After Installing a FreeBSD ISO Image

For Cloud Servers using the FreeBSD Operating System

This guide describes how to configure the network and install VMware Tools after installing the ISO image.

VMware Tools consist of a set of utilities that you install in the server's operating system. We recommend that you install VMware Tools to ensure the proper operation of your server.

Requirements
  • You have already installed FreeBSD.

  • You have during the installation:

      • to assign a host name.

      • the corresponding components are installed.

      • the network interface vmx VMware VMXNET3 Ethernet Adapter.

      • IPv4 for the network interface vmx VMware VMXNET3.

      • DHCP is used to configure the network.

      • in the Resolver Configuration menu in the Search field 8.8.8.8, 10.255.255.1, 8.8.8.8.

      • in the menu Resolver Configuration in the field IPv4 DNS #1 10.255.255.1.

      • no additional components installed.

      • no additional users created.

  • You are in the Infrastructure > Servers section of the Cloud Panel.

Please Note

If you have not configured your server yet, it may only be accessible via the KVM console.

Configuring the Network

  • Select the desired server.

  • Click Actions > Launch KVM Console. The KVM Console opens in a new tab.

  • Click Send Ctrl+Alt+Del.

  • Log on to the server as an administrator.

  • Make sure that FreeBSD is running in the shell.

  • Open the file /etc/rc.conf with the editor:
    :~# ee /etc/rc.conf

  • Add the following entries:
    static_routes="gw"
    route_gw="10.255.255.1 -iface vmx0"
    defaultrouter="10.255.255.1"

  • Open the file /etc/resolv.conf with the editor:
    static_routes="gw"
    route_gw="10.255.255.1 -iface vmx0"
    defaultrouter="10.255.255.1"
    Enter your main IP address for route_gw and defaultrouter.

  • To restart the network, type the following command:
    :~# /etc/rc.d/routing restart

  • To install Perl, enter the following commands:
    :~# cd /usr/ports/misc/compat6x
    :~# make;make install;make clean
    :~# cd /usr/ports/lang/perl5.18
    :~# make install clean

How to Install VMware Tools

  • Open the Cloud Panel.

  • Click DVD Drive.

  • On the Applications tab, select the  VMware Tools FreeBSD DVD.

  • Click Load DVD.

  • Open the KVM console.

  • To mount the DVD drive, type the following commands:
    :~# mkdir -p /media/cdrom
    :~# mount -t cd9660 /dev/cd0 /media/cdrom

  • Change to the root directory
    :~# cd /root Enter your main IP address for route_gw and defaultrouter.

  • Copy the installation file
    :~# cp /media/cdrom/vmware-freebsd-tools.tar.gz /root

  • To unpack VMware Tools, type the following command:
    :~# tar zxpf /root/vmware-freebsd-tools.tar.gz

  • Change to the /root/vmware-tools-distrib directory
    :~# cd /root/vmware-tools-distrib

  • Run the VMware installer :~# vmware-install.pl -d

  • Change to the directory /usr/local/bin/.
    :~# cd /usr/local/bin/

  • Run VMware Config Tools
    :~# vmware-config.pl

  • Configure VMware Tools.

  • To delete the installation files, enter the following command:
    :~# rm -rf /root/vmware*

  • Restart the server.

  • Open the terminal.

  • To verify that VMware Tools has started, type the following command:
    :~# /etc/init.d/vmware-tools status
