Configuring the server after installing an ISO image (FreeBSD)

This guide describes how to configure the network and install VMware Tools after installing the ISO image.

VMware Tools consists of a series of utilities that you install in the server's operating system. Install VMware Tools to ensure proper operation of your server.


You have already installed FreeBSD.

During the installation:

  • Assigned a host name

  • Installed the corresponding components

  • Network interface vmx VMware VMXNET3 Ethernet Adapter was selected

  • IPv4 for the network interface vmx VMware VMXNET3

  • DHCP to configure the network

  • In the menu Resolver Configuration, in the Search field:,,

  • In the Resolver Configuration menu, in the IPv4DNS#1 field:

  • No other components installed

  • No other users created

You are in the Cloud Panel under Infrastructure > Server.

Please note: If you have not yet configured the server, it may only be accessible via the KVM console.

To configure the network, proceed as follows:

Step 1

Activate the required server.

Step 2

Click Actions > Start KVM Console.

The KVM console opens in a new tab.

step 3

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Step 4

Log in to the server as administrator.

Step 5

Make sure that FreeBSD is running in the shell.

Step 6

Open the /etc/rc.conf file with the editor.

:~# ee /etc/rc.conf
Step 7

Insert the following entries:

route_gw=" -iface vmx0"
Step 8

Open the file /etc/resolv.conf with the editor.

route_gw=" -iface vmx0"

Enter your main IP address for route_gw and defaultrouter.

Step 9

To restart the network, enter the following command:

:~# /etc/rc.d/routing restart
Step 10

To install Perl, type the following commands:

:~# cd /usr/ports/misc/compat6x
:~# make;make install;make clean
:~# cd /usr/ports/lang/perl5.18
:~# make install clean

To install VMware Tools:

Step 1

Open the Cloud Panel.

Step 2

Click DVD drive.

step 3

On the Applications tab, select the VMwareToolsFreeBSD DVD.

Step 4

Click LoadDVD.

Step 5

Open the KVM console.

Step 6

To mount the DVD drive, type the following commands:

:~# mkdir -p /media/cdrom
:~# mount -t cd9660 /dev/cd0 /media/cdrom
Step 7

Change to the root directory.

:~# cd /root

Enter your main IP address for route_gw and defaultrouter.

Step 8

Copy the installation file.

:~# cp /media/cdrom/vmware-freebsd-tools.tar.gz /root
Step 9

To unpack VMware Tools, type the following command:

:~# tar zxpf /root/vmware-freebsd-tools.tar.gz
Step 10

Go to the /root/vmware-tools-distrib directory.

:~# cd /root/vmware-tools-distrib
Step 11

Run the VMware installer.

:~# -d
Step 12

Change to the directory /usr/local/bin/

:~# cd /usr/local/bin/
Step 13

Run the VMware Config Tools.

Step 14

Configure VMware Tools.

Step 15

To delete the installation files, enter the following command:

:~# rm -rf /root/vmware*
Step 16

Restart the server.

Step 17

Open the terminal.

Step 18

To verify that VMware Tools has started, type the following command:

:~# /etc/init.d/vmware-tools status
