More information on the IPA
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a standardized, globally recognized system of phonetic notation. In the IPA, one symbol equals one sound. The IPA categorizes sounds based on how and where they are produced in the human vocal tract. Dictionaries include words in their IPA format.
For example:
ionosphere
noun
ion·o·sphere (ī-ˈä-nə-ˌsfir)
The boldface text is the word in IPA format.
