Add, Change, or Delete an NS Record for a Subdomain

NS records allow you to configure individual subdomains with different name servers than the root domain itself. For example, the DNS management of a subdomain can be delegated to another provider to use the subdomain with an external website or email service.

Adding an NS Record

You can add an NS record in the Control Panel:

Guided Steps

  • Log in to 1&1 IONOS and go to the Domains & SSL section.
  • Click on the Gear SYMBOLfor the desired domain under Actions and then on DNS.
  • Click ADD RECORD and select NS under Type.
  • Enter the desired subdomain in the Hostname field. For example, www if you want to create the record for www.domain.tld .
  • In the Point to field, type the host name of the name server. For example ns1.example.com.
  • Optional: Select the desired TTL(Time-To-Live).
  • Click Save.

Your changes are effective immediately at 1&1 IONOS. However, it can take up to 1 hour for the change to take effect externally due to the decentralized structure of the Domain Name System.
