NS records allow you to configure individual subdomains with different name servers than the root domain itself. For example, the DNS management of a subdomain can be delegated to another provider to use the subdomain with an external website or email service.

Adding an NS Record

You can add an NS record in the Control Panel:

Guided Steps

  • Log in to IONOS and go to the Domains & SSL section.
  • Click on the Gear SYMBOLfor the desired domain under Actions and then on DNS.
  • Click ADD RECORD and select NS under Type.
  • Enter the desired subdomain in the Hostname field. For example, www if you want to create the record for www.domain.tld .
  • In the Point to field, type the host name of the name server. For example ns1.example.com.
  • Optional: Select the desired TTL(Time-To-Live).
  • Click Save.

Editing an NS Record

Existing NS records are displayed in the DNS area of the respective domain. You can edit any NS record in the Control Panel at any time.

  • Click on the Gear SYMBOLfor the desired domain under Actions and then on DNS.
  • For the desired NS record, under Actions, click on the Gear SYMBOL and then on EDIT RECORD.
  • To change the name server of the subdomain, enter its hostname in the Value field. For example ns1.example.com.
  • To change the TTL(Time-To-Live), select the desired item from the drop-down menu.
  • Click Save.

Deleting an NS Record

You can delete an NS record at any time in the Control Panel.

  • Click on the Gear SYMBOL for the desired domain under Actions, and then on DNS.

  • Click on the Gear SYMBOL for the desired NS Record under Actions, and then on DELETE RECORD .

  • Confirm the deletion process by clicking on DELETE.

Your changes are effective immediately at IONOS. However, it can take up to 1 hour for the change to take effect externally due to the decentralized structure of the Domain Name System.
