Changing the domain assigned to PrestaShop

This article explains how to change the domain associated with your PrestaShop website.

To change your shop’s domain, first change the domain for your project in your IONOS account. Then enter the new domain in your PrestaShop settings. The following sections explain how to do this.

Notes

  • If you have just registered the desired domain, it may take up to 24 hours for the switch to the new domain to take effect.
  • If the old domain still points to the PrestaShop website afterwards, please manually change the target directory to a different one.

  • You must also set the domain in the admin panel of your PrestaShop website. Instructions on how to do this are provided further down in this article.

Change the domain in your IONOS account

  • Log in to your IONOS account.
  • In the title bar, click on Menu > Web Projects. An overview of your web projects will be displayed.
  • Click Manage project for the PrestaShop website you want.
  • In the Domain (web address) section, click on the three dots.
  • Click on Change domain.
  • Select the domain or subdomain you want.
  • Optional: Disconnect the linked domain or subdomain by clicking the slider and then clicking Save.

Setting up a domain on a PrestaShop website

You need to remove the reference to the old domain or add the new domain within PrestaShop itself.

  • Log in to the admin area of your PrestaShop website using your admin credentials.
  • Click on Shop Parameters > Traffic & SEO.
    Note: For older 1.6 versions, the path is Preferences > SEO & URLs.
  • Navigate to the Set shop URL section.
  • In the Shop Domain and SSL Domain fields, enter the desired domain which your PrestaShop website should be accessible in future. The domain should be entered without the protocol prefixes (http:// or https://).
  • Click Save on the right.

Note: PrestaShop documentation highly recommends clearing the store's cache (under Advanced Parameters > Performance) after altering the Shop/SSL domain to ensure the .htaccess file regenerates properly and the new URLs route correctly across the storefront.

Your PrestaShop website is now accessible via the new domain.
