Creating a MariaDB database in your IONOS account

Valid for Web Hosting, ASP.NET Hosting (Windows Hosting), and Managed Dedicated Servers.

MariaDB is the database system that IONOS provides for new databases. It replaces MySQL.

Note

You can continue to use existing MySQL databases without making any changes. MariaDB is fully compatible with MySQL, as it was developed based on the MySQL codebase as an open-source replacement for MySQL. Scripts and content management systems, such as WordPress, that require a MySQL database can therefore be used with MariaDB without any adjustments.

Note

If you install WordPress or another application using Click & Build, the required database is created automatically. In this case, you do not need to create a database.

  • Log in to your IONOS account.
  • Click Menu > Hosting in the title bar. If you have multiple contracts, select the desired Hosting contract.

  • Find the Databases section. There, click Create (if no database exists yet) or click Manage and then Create Database. The Create database page is displayed.

  • Select the database you want. Standard databases are included free of charge in your plan. Performance databases offer more performance and can be optionally added to your contract. For more information, see the article Performance databases: more power for your projects.
    • To create a standard database, click Select in the Standard tile.
    • To create a performance database, click Order in the Performance tile and follow the instructions. After the purchase, you will be taken directly to the creation process.

  • Optional: Enter a description text. 

  • Enter the desired password .

Please Note

Make a note of the database password immediately. You will not be able to retrieve it later.

  • To create the database, click Save.

The details of your database are displayed, and the database setup is completed. This may take a moment.

Note

In the database details, you will find all the information your application needs to access the database: host name, database name, and username. You can retrieve this information at any time by clicking the database you want in the overview of your databases.
