Telegram is one of the most popular messaging apps on the market and a common alternative to WhatsApp. Its end-to-end encryption lends it an extra layer of security. But now that WhatsApp and other messaging apps include this feature, many users are returning to their old favorites and want to delete their Telegram account.
Another advantage of Telegram has recently turned into a downside: Telegram leaves the user a lot of freedom. There’s no algorithm that checks content. This freedom is slowly becoming a problem, especially regarding Telegram groups.
On platforms like Facebook and Twitter, there are notes about fake content and users can report, block, and delete posts. Telegram doesn’t offer any of these features, which is one reason why users might want to delete their account.
What to pay attention to when deleting your Telegram account
Deleting Telegram is simple and easy if you keep a few key points in mind. You can do it either in the app or in the browser. All you’ll need is the phone number that you used to register for Telegram.
Telegram accounts are automatically deleted if you haven’t logged in for six months. This timeframe can be changed in the settings. Of course, it’s also possible to delete the app before then.
But be careful:
Once you’ve deleted your Telegram account, all of your contacts, messages, links, documents, photos, stickers and files will be permanently gone and cannot be restored. Once an account has been deleted, you’ll have to wait anywhere from a few hours to a few days to create a new one. Groups will continue to exist, even after the group’s founder has left Telegram.
Short and simple: Deleting Telegram in three steps
- Enter the following address in your browser: https://my.telegram.org/delete. Enter the phone number you use for Telegram in the field “Your Phone Number” and click “Next”.
- Enter the confirmation code that’s sent to you in the Telegram app. Click “Sign in”.

What happens after you delete your Telegram account?
Once you’ve deleted your account on Telegram, you can’t recover it. All of your messages, photos, videos, and other data are deleted from the servers. Only groups that you started or were a part of will continue to exist. As for the app itself, you’ll have to manually delete it from your smartphone.
If you decide to create a new account, you’ll have to wait a few hours or even up to a few days. Your phone number will be blocked on Telegram during this time. But after that, you should have no problem making a new account.
